Set Your Mind Above
Primary Scripture: Colossians 3:1–4 (LSB)
“Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.”
— Colossians 3:1–2
Every day, our minds are pulled in a thousand different directions.
Breaking news.
Social media.
Financial pressures.
Political debates.
Family responsibilities.
Work deadlines.
The world constantly competes for our attention, telling us what should matter most. Before long, it’s easy to become consumed by temporary concerns while losing sight of eternal realities.
The Apostle Paul gives believers a different perspective. Because we have been raised with Christ, we are called to think differently, live differently, and value different things than the world around us.
Your Citizenship Has Changed
When you trusted in Jesus Christ, something remarkable happened.
You didn’t simply adopt a new religion.
God made you a new creation.
Your sins were forgiven.
You were adopted into His family.
And your true citizenship became heaven.
Paul reminds believers that Christ is seated at the right hand of God, reigning over all creation. Because our lives are now hidden with Christ, our greatest hope is no longer found in earthly success, possessions, or recognition.
Those things may have value, but they are never meant to become our identity.
Our identity is found in Christ alone.
Think Eternally
To “set your mind on the things above” doesn’t mean ignoring earthly responsibilities.
Christians should work hard, love their families, serve their churches, and care for their communities.
Instead, Paul is reminding us to evaluate everything through an eternal lens.
Ask yourself:
Will this matter in eternity?
Does this decision honor Christ?
Am I investing in things that will last forever?
So much of what consumes our attention today will be forgotten a hundred years from now.
But every act of faithfulness…
Every prayer…
Every conversation about the gospel…
Every sacrifice made for Christ…
Has eternal significance.
Guard Your Mind
What we continually think about eventually shapes how we live.
If our minds are constantly filled with fear, anger, envy, or worldly ambition, our hearts will follow.
But when we fill our minds with God’s Word, our thinking begins to change.
We become more thankful.
More content.
More patient.
More hopeful.
Isaiah wrote:
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”
— Isaiah 26:3
Peace grows where our minds remain fixed on God.
Christ Is Our Life
Paul makes one of the most beautiful statements in Colossians:
“Christ, who is our life…”
Notice he doesn’t say Christ is merely part of life.
Or an important priority.
He says Christ is our life.
Everything else flows from that relationship.
Our careers.
Our marriages.
Our parenting.
Our friendships.
Our ministry.
Our future.
Everything finds its proper place when Christ is at the center.
Today’s Challenge
Take inventory of your thoughts today.
What has occupied your mind this week?
Has it drawn you closer to Christ or distracted you from Him?
Spend a few extra minutes reading God’s Word instead of scrolling through your phone.
Thank Him for the eternal hope you have in Christ.
Ask Him to help you see today’s opportunities through the lens of eternity.
Remember…
This world is not your home.
Your Savior reigns from heaven.
Your future is secure.
Your life is hidden with Christ.
So don’t let temporary things steal your attention from eternal truths.
Keep your eyes on Jesus.
Set your mind above.
And whatever today brings…
