Examine Your Heart

Primary Scripture: 2 Corinthians 13:5 (LSB)

“Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test?”
— 2 Corinthians 13:5

One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is assuming everything is well simply because we attend church, know the right answers, or have called ourselves Christians for many years.

The Bible repeatedly encourages believers to pause, reflect, and honestly examine their hearts before the Lord. This isn’t meant to produce fear or constant uncertainty—it is meant to cultivate genuine faith, sincere repentance, and joyful assurance.

The Apostle Paul tells the Corinthians, “Examine yourselves.” In other words, don’t compare yourself to other people. Compare your life to God’s Word.

A Healthy Spiritual Checkup

Just as we schedule physical checkups to monitor our health, God calls us to regularly examine our spiritual lives.

Ask yourself:

Do I truly love Jesus Christ?

Do I desire to obey His Word?

Am I growing in holiness?

Do I repent when I sin?

Do I love other believers?

Do I long to know God more?

None of us lives these truths perfectly, but a genuine believer will see the Holy Spirit producing growth over time.

Fruit Reveals the Root

Jesus said,

“You will know them by their fruits.”
— Matthew 7:16

Good fruit does not save us.

Christ alone saves.

But good fruit reveals that Christ has already changed the heart.

A growing love for God’s Word.

A desire to pray.

A hatred for sin.

A willingness to forgive.

A concern for others.

A longing to glorify God.

These are evidences of the Holy Spirit’s work within us.

Confirm Your Calling

Peter writes:

“Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and choosing certain…”
— 2 Peter 1:10

Peter then lists qualities that should increasingly characterize the believer:

Faith.

Moral excellence.

Knowledge.

Self-control.

Perseverance.

Godliness.

Brotherly affection.

Love.

These are not a checklist for earning salvation.

They are signs of a life being transformed by God’s grace.

Examine Yourself—Then Rest in Christ

Self-examination should never end with ourselves.

It should always lead us back to Christ.

If the Holy Spirit reveals sin, confess it.

If He exposes pride, humble yourself.

If He reminds you of His faithfulness, thank Him.

The goal is not to become consumed with introspection.

The goal is to become more like Jesus.

Today’s Challenge

Take ten quiet minutes today.

Open God’s Word.

Pray Psalm 139:23–24:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart… and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.”

Invite the Holy Spirit to search your heart honestly.

Then rejoice that your hope rests not in your perfection, but in Christ’s perfect righteousness.

Remember…

A healthy Christian regularly examines their heart…

Not because they doubt God’s promises…

But because they treasure them.

Walk humbly.

Repent quickly.

Trust Christ completely.

And whatever today brings…
