Faith: Substance and Evidence

Good morning! There's something I find deeply comforting about the way this verse refuses to let faith be vague or wispy — it insists that faith has weight, has grip, has the texture of something you can actually hold onto. I'm so glad you're here today, because I think this truth is exactly what many of us need to hear right now.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)

Good morning, friend. I've been thinking lately about how we often treat faith as something fragile — a feeling that comes and goes with our circumstances. But today's verse stopped me in my tracks and reminded me that Scripture describes faith as something far more solid and real than that.

The writer of Hebrews doesn't say faith is a wish or a warm feeling. He uses two striking words: *substance* and *evidence*. Substance speaks of something real enough to stand on — a foundation under your feet even when you cannot see the ground. Evidence is a legal term, the kind that holds up in court. Faith, then, is not pretending things are fine. It is being genuinely convinced of realities that our eyes haven't yet confirmed.

This matters enormously for the race we are running. There will be stretches — and you may be in one right now — where God's promises feel distant and the finish line is invisible. In those moments, faith is the grip that keeps your hand on the baton. It is not denial of the difficulty; it is confidence in the One who made the promise. The unseen is not the same as the untrue.

The heroes listed later in this same chapter ran their laps of the race on exactly this kind of faith. They did not receive everything they were promised in their lifetimes, yet they kept running. Their faith was real enough to shape decisions, real enough to risk comfort, real enough to cost them something. That is the kind of faith that finishes races.

Take It With You

Today, name one specific thing you are trusting God for that you cannot yet see, and speak it aloud as a statement of confident hope rather than anxious longing — let your words match the substance Scripture says faith actually is.

Prayer: Lord, strengthen my grip on Your promises today; when I cannot see what You are doing, help me trust that Your word is solid ground beneath my feet.

1909 — Blériot Crosses the English Channel

On July 25, 1909, French aviator Louis Blériot became the first person to fly an airplane across the English Channel, completing the 23-mile journey in about 37 minutes. His flight was a triumph of perseverance — he had suffered multiple crashes and setbacks before this historic crossing. It stands as a beautiful reminder that pressing on through repeated difficulty can lead to breakthroughs once thought impossible.

A Kindness to Share
Reach out today to someone who is going through a hard season — a text, a call, or even a handwritten note — and tell them one specific reason you believe in them and are praying for them. Sometimes a single encouraging word is the evidence of hope another person desperately needs.
