Store Up Eternal Treasure

Invest in Eternity

Primary Scripture: Matthew 6:19–21 (LSB)

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Every day, we make investments.

We invest our time.

Our energy.

Our money.

Our attention.

Our talents.

The question isn’t whether we’re investing.

The question is what we’re investing in.

Jesus reminds us that there are only two kinds of treasures: those that are temporary and those that are eternal. One day everything we own on earth will be left behind, but what is done for Christ and His kingdom will last forever.

Earthly Treasures Never Last

There is nothing wrong with working hard, providing for your family, or wisely managing the resources God has entrusted to you.

The Bible commends diligence and faithful stewardship.

Jesus isn’t condemning possessions.

He is warning against making possessions our treasure.

Homes eventually wear out.

Cars break down.

Technology becomes obsolete.

Careers end.

Bank accounts fluctuate.

Even our healthiest bodies grow old.

Everything this world offers is temporary.

That doesn’t mean these things have no value.

It simply means they were never meant to become the center of our lives.

When our hearts are anchored to temporary things, disappointment is inevitable.

But when our hearts are anchored to Christ, we possess something that can never be taken away.

The Best Investment You’ll Ever Make

Jesus tells us to “store up treasures in heaven.”

How do we do that?

By living for the things that matter to God.

Every time you share the gospel with someone…

You are investing in eternity.

Every time you encourage another believer…

You are investing in eternity.

Every prayer offered in faith…

Every act of generosity…

Every sacrifice made for Christ…

Every child taught God’s Word…

Every missionary supported…

Every quiet act of obedience that no one else notices…

God sees it all.

These things do not earn our salvation.

Salvation is God’s free gift through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Rather, these are the joyful responses of hearts that have already been transformed by His grace.

The greatest investments are often the ones the world never applauds.

Your Heart Follows Your Treasure

Jesus makes an incredible statement:

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Notice He doesn’t say your treasure follows your heart.

He says your heart follows your treasure.

Whatever you consistently invest in becomes increasingly important to you.

If your greatest investment is earthly success, your heart will become consumed with temporary things.

But if you invest your life in Christ and His kingdom, your love for Him will continue to grow.

Our priorities reveal what we truly value.

That is why regular worship, prayer, Bible study, generosity, and serving others are so important.

They continually redirect our hearts toward what will last forever.

Live with Eternity in View

Imagine standing before Jesus one day.

None of us will wish we had spent more time worrying.

None of us will wish we had accumulated more possessions simply for ourselves.

We will rejoice over every opportunity we took to love others, serve faithfully, and point people to Christ.

Every ordinary day becomes extraordinary when viewed through the lens of eternity.

A conversation with a neighbor.

A prayer for a struggling friend.

An encouraging note.

A faithful witness at work.

A generous gift to someone in need.

God delights in using ordinary acts of obedience for eternal purposes.

Never underestimate what He can accomplish through a willing heart.

Today’s Challenge

Take a few minutes today and evaluate your investments.

Not just your financial investments.

Your life investments.

Where are you spending your time?

What receives your greatest attention?

What consumes your thoughts?

Ask God to help you invest more intentionally in the things that have eternal value.

Choose one practical way today to serve someone, encourage another believer, or share the hope of the gospel.

Those investments will never lose their value.

Remember…

Everything on earth will one day fade away.

But every soul reached…

Every prayer offered…

Every act of faithful obedience…

Every sacrifice made for Christ…

Will echo throughout eternity.

Live for what lasts.

Invest where neither moth nor rust can destroy.

Store up treasures in heaven.

And whatever today brings…

Finish the Race.
