Justification is one of the most precious truths in Scripture. It means the believer is not gradually earning a right standing with God. God declares the sinner righteous on the basis of Christ’s perfect life, sacrificial death, and resurrection. This righteousness is received by faith, not earned by works. Good works matter, but they are the fruit of salvation, not the ground of salvation. Justification gives the Christian assurance because our standing before God rests on Christ, not our fluctuating performance. This does not produce careless living. It produces grateful obedience because the believer has been accepted in the Beloved.
