Many Christians quietly ask a question they are often afraid to say out loud:
“Why doesn’t God feel close anymore?”
Perhaps there was a time when reading Scripture filled your heart with joy. Prayer came naturally. Worship stirred your soul. You sensed God’s presence in everyday life.
But now…
The Bible feels difficult to read.
Prayer seems dry.
Worship feels routine.
God appears silent.
If you’ve experienced that, you’re not alone.
Some of the most faithful men and women in Scripture walked through seasons of spiritual dryness. David cried out to God while feeling forgotten. Elijah became so discouraged that he wanted to give up. Even the sons of Korah wrote of their deep longing for God’s presence.
Spiritual dryness is not always evidence that your faith is failing.
Sometimes it is the very place where God deepens it.
One of the greatest mistakes we can make is measuring God’s nearness by our emotions.
Our feelings are real, but they are not always reliable.
They rise and fall with circumstances, health, fatigue, disappointment, and countless other factors.
God’s promises, however, never change.
When He says,
“I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”
He means exactly that.
Whether we feel His presence or not.
Faith grows strongest when it learns to trust God’s character rather than our emotions.
That is why the psalmist speaks to his own soul.
Instead of allowing his feelings to control him, he reminds himself of what he knows to be true.
Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why are you disturbed within me?
Wait for God, for I shall still praise Him,
For the salvation of His presence. (Psalm 42:5)
Sometimes we need to preach the Gospel to our own hearts.
We remind ourselves that Christ has not abandoned us.
His death and resurrection secured our relationship with God.
The Holy Spirit still dwells within every believer.
Our standing before the Father is based on Christ’s finished work—not on whether today’s emotions happen to be strong or weak.
Seasons of dryness also invite us to examine our hearts honestly.
Is there unconfessed sin?
Have we become distracted by the cares of this world?
Have we neglected prayer or God’s Word?
Sometimes repentance is needed.
Other times, however, there is no hidden sin at all.
God simply uses quiet seasons to mature our faith.
Just as strong roots grow deep beneath the surface long before anyone sees fruit above the ground, God often performs His greatest work where our eyes cannot yet see it.
If today feels spiritually dry, don’t stop pursuing the Lord.
Continue opening His Word.
Continue praying, even when the words seem few.
Continue gathering with His people.
Continue worshiping.
Not because those habits earn God’s love.
But because they keep your heart turned toward the One who has already loved you perfectly.
One day, you may look back and realize that the season you thought God was distant was actually the season He was teaching you to walk by faith instead of feelings.
The Christian life is not built upon emotional highs.
It is built upon the unchanging faithfulness of God.
And that faithfulness never runs dry.
Prayer
Father, there are days when You seem distant and my heart feels weary. Help me to trust Your promises more than my emotions. Give me a deeper hunger for Your Word, perseverance in prayer, and confidence that You are working even when I cannot see it. Thank You for never leaving nor forsaking Your children. Strengthen my faith as I learn to walk by trust and not by feelings. In Jesus’ name, amen.
