Reporter: Why Does White House Staff Treat Biden Like a Baby?

Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday rejected a claim made in a new book that said President Joe Biden had fumed over his aides treating him like a ‘toddler’ after his accidental call to remove Russian President Vladimir Putin from power.

In The Last Politician: Inside Joe Biden’s White House and the Struggle for America’s Future, The Atlantic’s Franklin Foer wrote that Biden felt like he was being babied after he quipped that Putin ‘cannot remain in power,’ while speaking to a crowd in Warsaw, Poland in March 2022.

During Tuesday’s press briefing, Fox News‘ Peter Doocy pointed out that Biden, at age 80, is the ‘oldest president in U.S. history,’ and then asked why White House staff treated him like a ‘baby.’

‘No one treats the president of the United States, the commander-in-chief, like a baby,’ Jean-Pierre answered. ‘That’s ridiculous.’

The press secretary went on to say that there will always be a ‘range of books about every administration’ that are filled with a ‘variety of claims.’

‘That is not unusual,’ she continued. ‘That happens all the time. And we’re not going to litigate thoes here. That’s something that we’re not going to speak to.’

She then spoke to some of those claims.

‘There is one thing that I do want to – ’cause I think I was asked this question last week by one of your colleagues about this particular excerpt that they were referring to.’

DailyMail.com had asked Jean-Pierre about Biden’s confession that he felt ‘tired,‘ blaming that on his advanced age, pointing to how few morning events were held at the White House.

Jean-Pierre called it a ‘ridiculous assumption to make.’

Foer’s book noted that it was ‘striking that he took so few morning meetings or presided over so few public events before 10 a.m.’

‘His public persona reflected physical decline and time’s dulling of mental faculties that no pill or exercise regime can resist,’ the author said. ‘In private, he would occasionally admit that he felt tired.’

But in the same passage, Foer says that the president’s ‘wartime leadership’, referring to the support of Ukraine in its ongoing battle against the invading Russian army, ‘drew on his weathered instincts and his robust self-confidence’.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, Foer writes that ‘the advantages of having an older president were on display.’

‘He wasn’t just a leader of the coalition, he was the West’s father figure, whom foreign leaders could call for advice and look to for assurance. It was his calming presence and his strategic clarity that helped lead the alliance to such an aggressive stance, which stymied authoritarianism on its front lines,’ the book says.

Jean-Pierre said White House officials had seen the excerpt.

‘And it seemed to be making the opposite overall point about how the value of his experience and wisdom resulted in rallying the free world against authoritarianism, which is important, we have seen this, you all have seen this, in the passage of the most historic agenda in recent history, in his handling of foreign policy like rallying the world around Ukraine,’ she said.

Doocy also pointed to Wall Street Journal polling that unveiled that even two-thirds of Democrats believed Biden was too old to run for a second term.

‘Look here’s what I know, here’s what I can speak to. I can speak to a president who has wisdom. I can speak to a president who has experience. I can speak to a president who has done historic, has taken historic action and has delivered in historic pieces of legislation. And that’s important,’ Jean-Pierre answered.

She also repeated an attack line against former President Donald Trump that Biden often deploys, including at a Labor Day speech the day before.

‘When the last guy was in the Oval Office talked about infrastructure week it was a joke, and the president passed a pretty important piece of legislation in a bipartisan way because of his wisdom, because of his experience, and now we have infrastructure decade,’ she said.
