Don’t Let Worry Steal Today
“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” — Matthew 6:34 (NASB)
Have you ever noticed how easily your mind races ahead?
Before you’ve even finished breakfast, you’re thinking about next week’s bills, your children’s future, your health, your job, or problems that haven’t even happened yet. It’s almost as if worry invites tomorrow’s burdens into today’s peace.
Jesus knew we would struggle with this.
That’s why, in the Sermon on the Mount, He gave one of the clearest commands in all of Scripture: “Do not worry about tomorrow.”
Notice that Jesus didn’t say life would be free from trouble. In fact, He acknowledged that “each day has enough trouble of its own.” Living in a fallen world means we will experience hardships, disappointments, uncertainty, and suffering. But Christ calls us to face those realities with faith rather than fear.
Worry has never solved a single problem.
It cannot add one hour to your life.
It cannot change the future.
It cannot make you healthier, wealthier, or wiser.
Instead, worry often robs us of today’s joy while accomplishing absolutely nothing about tomorrow.
The reason Christians can resist worry is not because we know what tomorrow holds.
It is because we know the One who holds tomorrow.
Your Heavenly Father is not surprised by anything you will face today. Before the sun rose this morning, He already knew every conversation you would have, every challenge you would encounter, every temptation you would face, and every opportunity He had prepared for you. Nothing catches Him off guard.
That truth should change how we pray.
Instead of replaying anxious thoughts over and over in our minds, Scripture calls us to bring them before God. Philippians 4 tells us to be anxious for nothing, but in everything, through prayer and thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to God. Then comes one of the Bible’s greatest promises: the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Did you notice the order?
Prayer comes before peace.
Too often we spend hours worrying and only a few minutes praying. Imagine what would happen if every anxious thought became an invitation to talk with your Heavenly Father instead.
Trust doesn’t mean pretending problems don’t exist.
Trust means believing that God’s wisdom is greater than yours, His timing is perfect, and His love never fails. Proverbs 3 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding. Even when we can’t see what God is doing, we can rest in who He is.
Remember who you are.
If you belong to Jesus Christ, you are an adopted child of God. Your Father is sovereign over every detail of your life. Romans 8:28 reminds us that He is working all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. That doesn’t mean everything is good, but it does mean God is able to use everything for His glory and for your ultimate good.
One of Satan’s favorite strategies is to keep believers distracted by fear of the future. If he can fill your mind with anxiety, he’ll often rob you of today’s opportunities to love, serve, worship, and glorify Christ.
Don’t let him.
Instead, focus on today’s assignment.
Love your family.
Serve others.
Work faithfully.
Read God’s Word.
Pray.
Share the Gospel.
Leave tomorrow in God’s hands.
Every day you spend trusting Christ is another testimony that your confidence is in Him—not your circumstances.
And never forget what we remind ourselves of every morning:
God’s mercies are new every morning.
Today’s mercy is enough for today’s burdens.
Tomorrow’s mercy will arrive tomorrow.
You don’t have to carry both.
Today’s Challenge
The next time you begin to worry today, stop immediately and pray.
Give that concern to God.
Then thank Him for three specific blessings He has already given you.
Choose faith instead of fear.
Trust instead of anxiety.
Rest instead of striving.
Remember…
God’s mercies are new this morning.
Don’t carry tomorrow’s burdens today.
Trust your faithful Father.
Walk by faith.
Glorify Him in every circumstance.
And whatever today brings…
Finish the Race.
