Faith is not wishful thinking. It is not crossing your fingers and hoping things work out. According to Hebrews 11:1, faith is substance — something solid enough to stand on — and evidence — something real enough to build a case upon. That is an extraordinary claim, and it changes everything about how we run this race.
The writer of Hebrews chose two remarkably sturdy words. 'Substance' carries the idea of a foundation, a firm ground beneath your feet. When you cannot see the path ahead, faith does not leave you floating — it places something real beneath you. The hope you carry is not a daydream; it is anchored to the character and promises of God, who does not waver.
'Evidence' is a courtroom word. It means there is a case to be made, a testimony to present. Every time God has been faithful in your past — every answered prayer, every valley walked through, every mercy that met you at just the right moment — that is evidence. Faith looks at that record and says, 'He will be faithful again.' The unseen future is not unknowable; it is held by a known and trustworthy God.
This is what keeps weary runners going. Not certainty about every detail of the course, but certainty about the One who laid it out. Faith is not the absence of questions — it is the presence of a firm grip on the God who holds the answers.
