He Goes With You

I've been thinking lately about how often we treat the Great Commission like a burden reserved for missionaries and pastors — people braver or more gifted than us. But when I sat with these verses this week, I was struck again by how personal and present Jesus sounds. He's not sending us out alone, and I wanted to share that reminder with you today.

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”
Matthew 28:19-20 (KJV)

There is something breathtaking about a command that comes wrapped in a promise. Jesus doesn't just tell us where to go — He tells us He is already there with us.

The risen Christ speaks these words with all authority in heaven and earth behind Him. That is the foundation of everything. Before He says 'go,' He establishes who He is — the one who has conquered sin and death. The command flows out of His victory, not out of our ability. That changes everything about how we approach the people around us.

Notice that Jesus does not say 'teach all nations if the conditions are right' or 'when you feel qualified.' The commission is active and ongoing — going, baptizing, teaching. It is a life lived on mission, not a single dramatic moment. And it is meant for every follower, in every ordinary neighborhood, workplace, and family table.

The promise at the end is the heartbeat of it all: He is with us always, even to the end of the age. The race we are running is never a solo effort. Every step of faithful witness is taken with the living Christ beside us. That is not a poetic comfort — it is a solid, historical, resurrection-backed guarantee.

Take It With You

Today, look for one person in your ordinary path who needs to hear something true and good about Jesus — and trust that He is already at work in that conversation before you open your mouth.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You that You never send us anywhere You have not already gone before us — give us courage to go, and open eyes to see the people You have placed in our path. Amen.

1871: Heroism During the Great Chicago Fire

In October 1871, amid the catastrophic Great Chicago Fire, countless ordinary citizens and firefighters performed extraordinary acts of courage — rescuing neighbors, sheltering strangers, and rebuilding their devastated city with remarkable speed and communal resolve. The city's recovery became one of the most inspiring examples of human perseverance and generosity in American history. Chicago rose from the ashes stronger, and many new civic institutions were born from the tragedy.
