Attributes of God: What They Mean and Why They Matter
God is not like us.
He is not a bigger version of humanity. He does not grow, change, learn, or improve. He is perfect, eternal, and complete in Himself. When Christians speak about the attributes of God, we are talking about the characteristics He reveals about Himself in Scripture. Understanding who God affects everything else—how we worship, how we pray, how we face trials, and how we live.
Many believers know about God, but far fewer truly know Him. Yet Jesus prayed:
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)
Knowing God’s attributes is not merely an intellectual exercise. It is fuel for worship and confidence.
God Is Holy
One of the most emphasized attributes in Scripture is God’s holiness.
Isaiah saw the Lord seated upon His throne and heard the angels crying:
“Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.” (Isaiah 6:3)
God is completely pure and separated from sin. There is no darkness in Him. His holiness means that He cannot tolerate evil and that His standards are perfect.
This truth should humble us. We often compare ourselves with other people and conclude we are doing pretty well. But when we compare ourselves to God’s holiness, we recognize our need for grace.
God Is Eternal
Everything in our world has a beginning and an ending.
Not God.
Psalm 90:2 says:
“From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”
Before the stars existed, God was there. Before time began, He existed. Long after this world passes away, He will remain.
This means God never panics and never faces uncertainty. History unfolds according to His perfect plan.
When life feels unstable, Christians can rest in the One who never changes.
God Is Sovereign
God rules over all things.
Nothing catches Him by surprise.
Daniel 4:35 declares:
“He does according to His will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth; and no one can ward off His hand.”
Kings rise and fall.
Nations prosper and decline.
Wars begin and end.
Yet God remains enthroned.
His sovereignty does not remove human responsibility, but it assures believers that history is not random.
No election, economy, or world crisis can overthrow His purposes.
God Is Omnipotent
God possesses unlimited power.
Jeremiah wrote:
“Nothing is too difficult for You.” (Jeremiah 32:17)
He spoke the universe into existence.
He parted the Red Sea.
He raised Jesus from the dead.
And He continues sustaining creation by His power.
There are times when our problems seem overwhelming.
But nothing overwhelms God.
The God who created galaxies is more than sufficient for the struggles you face today.
God Is Omniscient
God knows everything.
Past.
Present.
Future.
Psalm 139 says:
“Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O Lord, You know it all.”
God never learns new information.
He never makes mistakes.
He never discovers unexpected circumstances.
This should comfort believers.
God knows every fear, every burden, and every tear.
Nothing in your life is hidden from Him.
God Is Omnipresent
God is present everywhere.
David asked:
“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?” (Psalm 139:7)
No believer is ever abandoned.
Whether in a hospital room, a lonely season, or moments of sorrow, God remains present.
Jesus promised:
“I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
God Is Loving
Perhaps no attribute is more celebrated than God’s love.
1 John 4:8 says:
“God is love.”
His love is not sentimental or weak.
It is sacrificial.
God demonstrated His love by sending His Son to die for sinners.
Romans 5:8 says:
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
God’s love is not based upon our performance.
It flows from His nature.
God Is Merciful
We deserve judgment.
Instead, God offers mercy.
Lamentations 3:22-23 says:
“His compassions never fail. They are new every morning.”
Every Christian is living proof of God’s mercy.
Had God dealt with us according to our sins, none of us would survive.
Mercy reminds us that salvation is entirely by grace.
God Is Just
God always does what is right.
He cannot be bribed or corrupted.
Deuteronomy 32:4 says:
“All His ways are just.”
This truth assures believers that evil will not ultimately prevail.
No injustice escapes His attention.
Every sin will either be punished at the cross or in judgment.
Because God is just, His righteousness guarantees that wrong will not have the final word.
God Is Faithful
Human beings break promises.
God never does.
Paul wrote:
“If we are faithless, He remains faithful.” (2 Timothy 2:13)
God always keeps His word.
His promises are certain.
His covenant with believers cannot fail.
That means Christians can face tomorrow with confidence.
Why God’s Attributes Matter
The more we understand who God is, the more we trust Him.
His holiness leads us to worship.
His sovereignty brings peace.
His power strengthens us.
His love comforts us.
His justice assures us.
His faithfulness sustains us.
A.W. Tozer famously wrote:
“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
He was right.
Many fears disappear when we remember who God truly is.
The God who saved us is holy.
He is eternal.
He is sovereign.
He is powerful.
He is loving.
He is faithful.
And because God does not change, believers can confidently run their race knowing that the One who began a good work in them will bring it to completion.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)
In a changing world, our unchanging God remains worthy of our trust, our worship, and our lives.
