Following a needed court victory against the Justice Department, former President Donald Trump criticized the inquiry over his handling of classified documents, identifying it as a “witch hunt.”
“The Fake News Mainstream Media, Democrats, and RINOs are obsessed with pushing the latest Witch Hunt against me,” Trump blasted away.
“All American Patriots know that I always do everything ‘by the book’ and that this Hoax will fail miserably just like the; Russia, Russia, Russia Scam, Impeachment Hoax #1, Impeachment Hoax #2, and all other attempts,” Trump added.
On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, granted Trump’s motion for a special master to comb through material seized by FBI agents during the Aug. 8 search and seizure at Mar-a-Lago.
The special master is tasked with filtering out any privileged material.
Trump has claimed that he declassified material stashed at Mar-a-Lago prior to the raid and has vehemently denied any allegations of wrongdoing.
A bevy of documents confiscated had material that ranged from “CONFIDENTIAL to TOP SECRET information,” the DOJ claimed in court filings. Agents had reportedly retrieved 26 boxes during the bombshell raid. Over 100 documents with classified markings were taken during the raid, according to the government.
Despite claiming material had been declassified, Trump’s lawyers conceded in court that “it would be appropriate for the special master to possess a Top Secret/SCI security clearance” to review the documents.
In addition to chastising the raid as a “witch hunt,” Trump also claimed that perpetrators of the raid sought to “weaponize Law Enforcement against the 45th President.”
“We have to rescue our great Country,” he added in the statement, which was disseminated by his Save America PAC.
Prior to the raid, various government officials had stopped by for business mogul’s Palm Beach estate on at least two occasions.
First was the National Archives and Records Administration’s seizure of 15 boxes in January. Upon discovering material with classified markings, the agency referred the matter to the DOJ, which opened an inquiry.
In June, officials reportedly returned to Mar-a-Lago to collect additional material, and Trump lawyer Christina Bobb signed a document asserting that the government retrieved all classified material from the resort, the New York Times reported.
The DOJ is investigating possible obstruction of justice and violations of the Espionage Act, according to an unsealed warrant for the August search and seizure.
An underlying affidavit added that the “government is conducting a criminal investigation concerning the improper removal and storage of classified information in unauthorized spaces, as well as the unlawful concealment or removal of government records.”
