The Vatican Fires Priest For Being Actively Pro-Life

Once again news coming out of the Vatican is disturbing, at least to me.

Even though the Catholic church is very clear in its writings concerning its objection to abortion, in practice some of those serving in the highest levels of the church more frequently pose as social justice activists.

The Catholic church has just dismissed pro-life leader Father Frank Pavone from the Catholic priesthood.

The decision will further anger pro-life Catholics, especially those who respect Pavone and appreciate his decades of service to the pro-life movement via Priests for Life.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law” (No. 2271).

From the Priests for Life website:

FR. FRANK PAVONE is one of the most prominent pro-life leaders in the world. Originally from New York, he was ordained in 1988 by Cardinal John O’Connor, and has dedicated his entire life and ministry to ending abortion. In 1993 he requested and received permission to serve as the National Director of Priests for Life, the largest pro-life ministry in the Catholic Church.”

“He is also the President of the National Pro-life Religious Council, the National Pastoral Director of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, and of Rachel’s Vineyard, the world’s largest ministry of healing after abortion. He travels throughout the country, to an average of four states every week, preaching and teaching against abortion. He broadcasts daily to hundreds of thousands of people on television, radio, and online programs. Mother Teresa asked him to speak in India on life issues. The Vatican appointed him to the Pontifical Academy for Life and to the Pontifical Council for the Family to help coordinate the pro-life activities of the Catholic Church. He was present at the bedside of Terri Schiavo as she was dying and was an outspoken advocate for her life.”

The leadership’s decision comes as Pope Francis is facing criticism for putting an abortion advocate on the Pontifical Academy for Life, claiming that giving abortion support to a Catholic Church platform helps “dialog.”

In a December 13 letter to the Catholic bishops in the United States, Papal Nuncio Archbishop Christophe Pierre wrote that the Dicastery for the Clergy issued the decision to defrock Pavone on November 9 — supposedly for “blasphemous communications on social media” and “persistent disobedience of the lawful instructions of his diocesan bishop.”

The Catholic News Agency reported:

“Father Pavone was given ample opportunity to defend himself in the canonical proceedings, and he was also given multiple opportunities to submit himself to the authority of his diocesan bishop,” explains a separate statement attached to Archbishop Pierre’s letter. “It was determined that Father Pavone had no reasonable justification for his actions.”

“Pavone, however, told CNA Saturday that he had not been notified about the Vatican’s judgment.”

“The communication from Archbishop Pierre does not specify the actions that led to Pavone’s dismissal or name the bishop he disobeyed.”

“The statement refers to Pavone as “Mr. Pavone” and calls him “a lay person,” underscoring the dramatic and immediate nature of the Vatican’s action.”

“Since Priests for Life, Inc. is not a Catholic organization, Mr. Pavone’s continuing role in it as a lay person would be entirely up to the leadership of that organization,” the statement says.

“Despite the supposed pronouncement, Father Pavone is still saying Mass and the Priests for Life website indicates he is a Catholic priest in good standing.”

As a former Catholic, I am hopeful the next Pope will move the church back to fearing God, instead of man.
