The One Decision That Will Change Your Day Before It Begins
“Choose for yourselves today whom you will serve… but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” — Joshua 24:15 (NASB)
Every morning begins with a decision.
Long before you answer emails, check social media, or head to work, your heart is already moving in a direction. You may not even realize you’re making a choice, but you are.
Will today be about serving yourself, or serving Christ?
Joshua stood before the people of Israel and challenged them to make a decision. They could continue following the false gods of the nations around them, or they could wholeheartedly serve the one true God. His declaration has echoed through history: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
That same choice confronts every believer each morning.
While we aren’t deciding whether to worship carved idols, we are deciding what will rule our hearts. Will we chase success above faithfulness? Will we seek comfort above obedience? Will we worry about tomorrow instead of trusting God’s promises today?
Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.” Before anything else captures your attention, let Christ capture your heart.
No one accidentally becomes spiritually mature.
Just as a runner doesn’t accidentally finish a marathon, Christians don’t accidentally grow in holiness. Spiritual growth is built through thousands of small, faithful decisions. Reading God’s Word. Spending time in prayer. Choosing gratitude instead of complaining. Extending forgiveness instead of holding onto bitterness. Obeying God even when it costs something.
These daily decisions shape the direction of our lives.
The world encourages us to react to whatever comes our way. Scripture calls us to live intentionally. Romans 12 reminds us to present ourselves as living sacrifices, continually transformed by the renewing of our minds. That transformation doesn’t happen once a year or once a month—it happens as we walk faithfully with Christ day after day.
Choosing Christ first doesn’t guarantee an easy day.
You may still face difficult conversations, unexpected setbacks, financial pressures, or disappointing news. But when your heart is anchored in Christ before those challenges arrive, you’ll respond differently. Instead of panic, you’ll remember God’s sovereignty. Instead of fear, you’ll lean on His promises. Instead of relying on your own strength, you’ll depend on His grace.
Remember who you are.
If you belong to Jesus Christ, you are an adopted child of God. Your identity is not found in your career, your accomplishments, your failures, or the opinions of others. You have been justified through faith, redeemed by Christ’s blood, and sealed by the Holy Spirit.
Because of that, every ordinary day becomes an opportunity to glorify God.
How you speak to your spouse matters.
How you treat your coworkers matters.
How you respond to frustration matters.
How faithfully you work when no one is watching matters.
Everything becomes an act of worship when it is done for the glory of Christ.
You won’t live this day perfectly.
There will be moments when you become impatient, distracted, or discouraged. When that happens, don’t stay down. Confess your sin quickly, receive God’s forgiveness, and keep walking. The Christian life is not about flawless performance; it is about faithful perseverance through the grace of God.
Never forget the truth we begin with each morning.
God’s mercies are new every morning.
Yesterday’s failures do not have to define today’s faithfulness. Because of Christ, you have been given another opportunity to walk with Him, obey Him, and reflect Him to the people around you.
Today’s Challenge
Before you check your phone tomorrow morning, spend five uninterrupted minutes with God.
Read a passage of Scripture.
Pray.
Commit your schedule, your conversations, and your decisions to the Lord.
Then ask one simple question:
“Lord, how can I glorify You today?”
Begin your day by choosing Christ.
Continue choosing Him throughout the day.
And trust Him to complete the work He has begun in you.
Remember…
God’s mercies are new this morning.
Choose Christ before the world.
Walk faithfully.
Stand firm.
Glorify God in everything you do.
And whatever today brings…
Finish the Race.
