Seek God First This Morning | The Strength You Need for Today
“In the morning, O LORD, You will hear my voice; In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch.” — Psalm 5:3 (NASB)
Every morning presents us with a choice. We can wake up and immediately allow the world to consume our attention, or we can begin the day by seeking the One who created it. Before the notifications, before the headlines, before the endless demands on our schedules, God invites us into His presence. There is no better way to prepare for the day ahead than by spending time with the Lord in prayer and His Word.
King David understood this truth well. He faced enemies, uncertainty, betrayal, and enormous responsibilities, yet he made it his habit to seek God first. In Psalm 5:3 he writes, “In the morning, O LORD, You will hear my voice; In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch.” David wasn’t simply checking a religious box—he was expressing complete dependence on the Lord. Before he confronted the battles of life, he first bowed before the King of Heaven.
The same principle applies to us today. We don’t know what challenges this day will bring. There may be unexpected disappointments, difficult conversations, temptations, or opportunities to serve Christ. But God already knows every detail. Nothing you will face today will surprise Him. When we seek Him first, we acknowledge that our strength, wisdom, and hope come from Him alone.
Jesus reinforced this truth during His earthly ministry. In Matthew 6:33 He said, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Our greatest priority is not our career, finances, accomplishments, or even solving every problem before us. Our first pursuit is God Himself. Everything else must flow from that relationship.
Jesus also modeled this habit perfectly. Even with crowds constantly seeking His attention, He often withdrew to lonely places to pray. If the sinless Son of God intentionally made time to commune with His Father, how much more should we? We cannot expect to walk in spiritual strength while neglecting the very source of that strength.
Beginning your day with God doesn’t require an hour-long Bible study every morning. Sometimes it’s simply opening the Scriptures, reading a Psalm, offering sincere prayers, and asking the Lord to guide your thoughts, words, and actions. A few focused moments with God can shape your entire perspective for the day.
As believers, we must also remember that every morning begins on a battlefield. Scripture reminds us that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Satan delights in distraction, anxiety, discouragement, and temptation. He would love nothing more than for Christians to rush into the day spiritually unprepared.
That is why Paul commands believers to put on the full armor of God. Before you step into today’s responsibilities, clothe yourself with truth. Guard your heart with righteousness. Stand on the peace of the Gospel. Lift the shield of faith. Take up the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Then pray continually, depending on God’s strength instead of your own.
Never forget who you are.
If you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are not simply trying to survive another busy day. You are an adopted child of God. You have been forgiven, redeemed, justified, and sealed by the Holy Spirit. Your Heavenly Father walks with you wherever you go. You never face today’s battles alone.
Because of that identity, your purpose is greater than simply making it through the day. Every conversation, every task, every act of kindness, and every decision becomes an opportunity to glorify God. Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Our faithful obedience points others toward Christ.
And don’t forget one of the greatest promises in all of Scripture: God’s mercies are new every morning.
Perhaps yesterday wasn’t your best day. Maybe you lost your temper, gave in to temptation, or simply became discouraged. God’s invitation today is not to remain trapped in yesterday’s failures. His compassion has not run out. His grace has not been exhausted. Through Christ, forgiveness is available, strength is renewed, and hope is restored.
Today is a fresh opportunity to walk faithfully.
Before you check your phone, spend a few moments thanking God for another day of life. Read Psalm 5. Pray for wisdom. Ask the Lord to prepare you for the spiritual battles ahead. Then walk confidently, knowing that your Heavenly Father is with you every step of the way.
Today’s Challenge
Before beginning your daily routine, spend five uninterrupted minutes with God.
Read Psalm 5 and Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Thank Him that His mercies are new this morning.
Ask Him to help you recognize the spiritual battles you’ll face today, and pray that every word, every decision, and every act of kindness would bring glory to Jesus Christ.
Then intentionally encourage one person today with the hope of the Gospel.
No matter what this day brings, remember this:
God’s mercies are new this morning.
Seek Him first.
Stand firm in the armor of God.
Walk as His beloved child.
And whatever today brings…
Finish the Race.
