Don’t Forget What God Has Done
Psalm 103:1–5 (LSB)
“Bless Yahweh, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.Bless Yahweh, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.”
Every day, we remember something.
We remember appointments.
Deadlines.
Bills.
Disappointments.
Conversations we would rather forget.
But David calls us to remember something far more important.
He speaks directly to his own soul:
“Bless Yahweh, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits.”
Why would David have to tell himself to remember?
Because our hearts naturally drift.
We remember what went wrong yesterday far more easily than we remember what God has already done for us.
When life becomes difficult, it is easy to focus on what we do not have.
But worship begins when we remember what we already possess in Christ.

He Pardons All Your Iniquities
David begins listing the benefits of God—not earthly luxuries, but eternal treasures.
“Who pardons all your iniquities.”
Notice that David starts with forgiveness.
Before speaking of healing.
Before redemption.
Before blessing.
Before satisfaction.
He starts with the pardon of sin.
That is where every believer’s greatest blessing begins.
Through Jesus Christ, the penalty for our sins was paid at the cross.
The guilt that once separated us from God has been removed.
We are no longer condemned enemies standing under His wrath.
Through faith in Christ, we have been reconciled to God and brought into His family.
Our sins are not overlooked or excused.
They were placed upon Jesus.
He bore the judgment we deserved so that we could receive the forgiveness we could never earn.
That truth alone should fill our hearts with continual praise.
He Redeems Your Life From the Pit
David continues:
“Who redeems your life from the pit.”
Without Christ, every one of us was spiritually helpless and headed toward eternal judgment.
We could not rescue ourselves.
We could not erase our guilt.
We could not make ourselves righteous before a holy God.
But Jesus stepped into our place.
He lived the perfect life we failed to live.
He bore God’s wrath on the cross.
He rose victoriously from the grave.
Through Him, believers have been rescued from the dominion of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of God’s beloved Son.
Christian, you have been rescued.
You have been redeemed.
You have been purchased by the blood of Christ.
You have been adopted into the family of God.
You were once lost, but now you belong to Him.
He Crowns You With Lovingkindness
David then writes:
“Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion.”
God does not merely tolerate His children.
He surrounds them with steadfast love and compassion.
Every morning, we awaken beneath the care of a faithful Father.
His compassion is greater than our weakness.
His mercy is stronger than our failures.
His grace never runs dry.
His love is not based on our changing emotions or inconsistent performance.
It is rooted in His unchanging character and secured through our union with Jesus Christ.
The world may reject you.
People may misunderstand you.
Your circumstances may change without warning.
But the steadfast love of God remains.
He Satisfies You With Good Things
Finally, David says that God satisfies our years with good things.
The greatest gift God gives is not comfort, success, wealth, or an easy life.
The greatest gift God gives is Himself.
Every spiritual blessing belongs to those who are united to Christ.
- His presence
- His peace
- His promises
- His Spirit
- His Word
- His church
- His grace
- His eternal inheritance
No circumstance can take these blessings away.
That is why Christians can worship in every season.
Whether life is easy or difficult.
Whether prayers are answered quickly or we are still waiting.
Whether today is filled with celebration or sorrow.
Our greatest blessings remain unchanged.
We are forgiven.
Redeemed.
Loved.
Adopted.
Secure in Christ.
Do Not Forget His Benefits
One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is spiritual forgetfulness.
We become so focused on the problems in front of us that we forget the salvation behind us and the glory ahead of us.
We remember our burdens but forget God’s benefits.
We remember unanswered prayers but forget the cross.
We remember what we have lost but forget what can never be taken away.
Perhaps today you need to stop asking:
“What do I still need?”
And instead ask:
“What has God already given me through Christ?”
You will quickly discover that the answer is far greater than anything you deserve.
God has forgiven your sins.
Redeemed your life.
Crowned you with lovingkindness.
Filled your life with spiritual blessings.
Promised you an eternal inheritance.
And your heart, like David’s, should respond:
“Bless Yahweh, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.”
Today’s Challenge
Take five minutes today and write down ten blessings God has already given you through Jesus Christ.
Do not stop at material gifts.
Thank Him for:
- Forgiveness
- Salvation
- Adoption
- Grace
- Mercy
- The Holy Spirit
- His Word
- His promises
- His church
- His faithfulness
Then spend time praising Him—not merely for what He does, but for who He is.
Remember…
God’s mercies are new this morning.
Never forget His benefits.
Bless His holy name.
Live with a grateful heart.
And whatever today brings…
