President Trump Announces He Will Not Be Participating In Any Primary Debates

President Trump revealed on Sunday via Truth Social that he will not be participating in any primary debates.

“New CBS POLL, just out, has me leading the field by “legendary” numbers. TRUMP 62%, 46 Points above DeSanctimonious (who is crashing like an ailing bird!), Ramaswamy 7%, Pence 5%, Scott 3%, Haley 2%, Sloppy Chris Christie 2%, “Aida” Hutchinson 1%. The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had, with Energy Independence, Strong Borders & Military, Biggest EVER Tax & Regulation Cuts, No Inflation, Strongest Economy in History, & much more. I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES!” Trump announced.

This news comes just after it was announced that the former president plans to attend an interview with Tucker Carlson instead of appearing for the first primary debate.

Numerous current polls demonstrate that Trump is the frontrunner of the Republican primary by a wide margin, leading his entire opposition by double digits.

Earlier in the year, Trump posed online, “When you’re leading by seemingly insurmountable numbers, and you have hostile Networks with angry, Trump and MAGA hating anchors asking the ‘questions,’ why subject yourself to being libeled and abused?”

Trump hinted at his plan to forgo the debate last Thursday. He said that “Reagan didn’t do it, and neither did others,” and that people “know [his] Record, one of the best ever.”

Some have attempted to change the former president’s mind in regard to his planned absence; RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel visited Trump’s Bedminster golf club to try to persuade the former president and GOP favorite to join the August 23 debate in Milwaukee.

“Why would I allow people at 1 or 2% and 0% to be hitting me with questions all night?” he said in an interview in June with Fox News host Bret Baier, who will be serving as a moderator. Trump has also repeatedly criticized Fox, the host of the Aug. 23 primetime event, insisting it is a “hostile network” that he believes will not treat him fairly.

Trump had been discussing a number of debate counterprogramming options, including sitting for an interview with ex-Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who has been hosting a show on the website formerly known as Twitter.

Carlson was spotted at Trump’s Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club ahead of the announcement, according to a person familiar with the visit who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it. The New York Times reported Saturday the interview set to air Wednesday has already been taped.

“We cannot confirm or deny — stay tuned,” said Trump spokesman Steven Cheung.

The idea had been one of several alternatives Trump had floated in conversations in recent weeks. They included possibly showing up in Milwaukee at the last minute or attending but sitting in the audience and offering live commentary on his Truth Social site. He had also discussed potentially calling into different networks to draw viewers from the debate, or holding a rally instead.
