When Temptation Is Strong, Remember This

Every Christian faces temptation.

Primary Scripture: Psalm 119:9–11

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By keeping it according to Your word.
With all my heart I have sought You;
Do not let me stray from Your commandments.
Your word I have treasured in my heart,
That I may not sin against You.

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve followed Jesus, how much Scripture you know, or how spiritually mature you have become. As long as we live in this fallen world, we will face the temptation to sin.

Temptation looks different for each of us.

For some, it is anger.

For others, lust.

Pride.

Greed.

Gossip.

Bitterness.

Dishonesty.

Jealousy.

The temptation to compromise.

Whatever form it takes, temptation often seems strongest when we are tired, discouraged, lonely, stressed, or spiritually distracted.

That is why we must be prepared before temptation arrives.

The psalmist asks an important question in Psalm 119:

“How can a young man keep his way pure?”

Then comes the answer:

“By keeping it according to Your word.”

A few verses later, he declares:

“Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You.”

The Word of God is one of the believer’s greatest weapons in the battle against temptation.

When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, He repeatedly responded with three powerful words:

“It is written.”

Jesus answered temptation with Scripture.

And Christian, we must learn to do the same.

When temptation tells you that sin will satisfy you, God’s Word reminds you that true satisfaction is found in Christ.

When temptation tells you that no one will ever know, God’s Word reminds you that nothing is hidden from God.

When temptation tells you that you cannot resist, Scripture reminds you that God always provides a way of escape.

First Corinthians 10:13 gives us one of the greatest promises concerning temptation:

“No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful.”

Think about those words.

God is faithful.

Temptation may be powerful.

But God is greater.

The passage continues by promising that God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able and that He will provide the way of escape.

The question is whether we will take it.

Sometimes the way of escape is very practical.

Walk away.

Close the browser.

Put down the phone.

End the conversation.

Leave the room.

Call a trusted Christian friend.

Open your Bible.

Pray immediately.

Do not stand there negotiating with temptation.

Run.

Joseph did.

When Potiphar’s wife attempted to seduce him, Joseph didn’t stay and debate the situation. He fled.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is simply get out of there.

Christian, remember something else this morning.

You are in a spiritual battle.

The enemy knows where you have fallen before.

He knows which lies have worked.

He knows when you’re vulnerable.

That is why Scripture tells us to be alert and sober-minded.

Put on the full armor of God.

Fill your mind with truth.

Guard your heart.

Carry the shield of faith.

Take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

And pray.

But what if you failed yesterday?

What if you gave in to temptation?

What if you sinned?

Do not hide from God.

Run to Him.

Confess your sin.

First John 1:9 reminds believers that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and righteous to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Remember:

God’s mercies are new every morning.

That does not give us permission to sin.

It gives repentant believers hope when we do.

Jesus Christ has already paid the penalty for every sin of those who belong to Him.

Your failures should drive you toward Christ—not away from Him.

And remember who you are.

If you belong to Jesus, you are an adopted child of God.

Sin is no longer your master.

You have been redeemed.

The Holy Spirit dwells within you.

You are being transformed into the image of Christ.

So don’t fight temptation merely because you fear consequences.

Fight because you love your Father.

Pursue holiness because you belong to Him.

Your faithful obedience brings glory to God.

Jesus said that we should let our light shine before others so they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.

Every time you resist temptation and choose obedience, you demonstrate that Christ is more valuable to you than the temporary pleasures of sin.

Today, temptation may come.

Be ready.

Know where you’re vulnerable.

Know your way of escape.

Keep God’s Word close.

Pray before the battle begins.

And when temptation comes…

Stand firm.

Resist the devil.

Run from sin.

Run toward Christ.

Today’s Challenge

Identify one area where you are most vulnerable to temptation.

Don’t excuse it.

Don’t minimize it.

Name it.

Then find one Scripture that directly addresses that temptation.

Write it down.

Memorize it.

Keep it with you.

When temptation comes, answer it with the truth of God’s Word.

And remember:

God’s mercies are new this morning.

You are His beloved child.

You are in a spiritual battle.

But through Christ, you are not powerless.

Stand firm.

Walk in holiness.

Glorify your Heavenly Father through your faithfulness.

And whatever today brings…

Finish the Race.
