Who Is God? The Sovereign King Over All Things
“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.” — Romans 11:36 (LSB)
Every worldview begins with a view of God.
Who is God? Is He merely a higher power? Is He a cosmic force? Is He simply loving and accepting? Or has He revealed Himself in a way that leaves no room for speculation?
These are not unimportant questions. In fact, they are the most important questions any person will ever answer. If we misunderstand God, we will misunderstand ourselves, salvation, sin, eternity, and even the purpose of life itself.
The good news is that God has not left humanity guessing. He has revealed Himself in His Word.
God Is Eternal
The Bible begins with a simple declaration:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1, LSB)
Scripture does not attempt to prove God’s existence. It simply proclaims it. Before there was a universe, before angels, before mankind, God already existed.
Psalm 90:2 declares:
“Before the mountains were born, Or You brought forth the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”
Unlike us, God has no beginning and no end. He never changes, never grows older, and never learns anything new. His character, truth, and promises remain forever.
Malachi 3:6 says:
“For I, Yahweh, do not change.”
That truth provides great comfort in a constantly changing world.
God Is Holy
One of the greatest mistakes people make today is creating God in their own image. Modern culture prefers a God who exists to make people comfortable.
But Scripture reveals something far greater.
Isaiah saw the Lord and heard the seraphim proclaim:
“Holy, Holy, Holy, is Yahweh of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory.” (Isaiah 6:3)
God is absolutely pure and completely separated from evil.
When Isaiah encountered God’s holiness, he did not boast in his goodness. Instead, he cried:
“Woe is me, for I am ruined!” (Isaiah 6:5)
God’s holiness exposes our sinfulness. The closer we come to understanding who God truly is, the more we recognize our need for mercy.
God Created Everything
Nothing exists apart from God.
Paul writes:
“For in Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible…” (Colossians 1:16)
The universe is not an accident. Human life is not random. History is not meaningless.
Every mountain, every star, every heartbeat exists because God created it.
Because He is Creator, He possesses absolute authority over His creation. God determines truth, morality, and purpose—not man.
God Knows Everything
Psalm 139 reveals that God knows us completely:
“O Yahweh, You have searched me and known me.” (Psalm 139:1)
He knows our thoughts.
He knows our fears.
He knows our failures.
He knows our future.
Nothing surprises Him.
God has never learned anything. He has never said, “I didn’t see that coming.”
His knowledge is perfect.
God Is Sovereign
Perhaps one of the most comforting truths in Scripture is God’s sovereignty.
Ephesians 1:11 teaches that God:
“…works all things according to the counsel of His will.”
Not some things.
All things.
God rules over kings and nations. He governs history. He controls what appears chaotic to us.
Psalm 115:3 says:
“But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.”
King Nebuchadnezzar learned this lesson after God humbled him. Daniel 4:35 declares:
“He does according to His will in the host of heaven And among the inhabitants of earth; And no one can strike against His hand Or say to Him, ‘What have You done?'”
God is never anxious.
God is never surprised.
God is never reacting.
He is the sovereign King over all things.
Why God’s Sovereignty Comforts Believers
Because God is sovereign, believers do not live by luck, fate, or coincidence.
Romans 8:28 reminds Christians:
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”
This does not mean all things are good.
Suffering is painful.
Loss is painful.
Trials are painful.
But God uses even difficult circumstances for His glory and our good.
Joseph understood this when he said to his brothers:
“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.” (Genesis 50:20)
Even the sinful actions of men cannot overthrow God’s eternal purposes.
The Cross Was Not Plan B
The greatest display of God’s sovereignty is found in the cross of Jesus Christ.
Acts 2:23 says Jesus was delivered over:
“…by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God…”
The crucifixion was not an accident.
It was not God’s backup plan.
It was His eternal purpose.
Through the death and resurrection of Christ, God provided salvation for sinners who repent and believe.
The God Who Deserves Worship
Who is God?
He is eternal.
He is holy.
He is Creator.
He is all-knowing.
He is sovereign.
He is just.
He is merciful.
He is gracious.
And He alone deserves our worship.
Paul concludes Romans 11 with these magnificent words:
“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:36)
Everything begins with God.
Everything exists through God.
Everything ultimately points back to God.
And that is why knowing Him is the most important pursuit of life.
