Mother’s Day: The Biblical Command to Honor Godly Mothers

In an age where motherhood is often minimized, mocked, or treated as secondary to career success and cultural activism, Scripture speaks with stunning clarity: mothers are to be honored. Not merely tolerated. Not casually appreciated once a year. Honored.

The biblical basis for honoring mothers begins in the Ten Commandments themselves. God declared in Exodus 20:12:

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”

This command was not presented as a suggestion. It was issued as divine law. The Apostle Paul later reaffirmed this truth in Ephesians 6:1-3, calling it “the first commandment with a promise.” Scripture repeatedly connects the honoring of parents with blessing, stability, and societal health.

Modern culture increasingly treats motherhood as burdensome or even oppressive. Yet Christianity has always elevated faithful motherhood as sacred work. The Bible consistently portrays godly mothers as pillars of wisdom, nurture, sacrifice, and spiritual formation.

The book of Proverbs paints perhaps the clearest picture. Proverbs 31 describes a virtuous woman who serves her household faithfully, fears the Lord, manages her home wisely, and teaches kindness. Verse 28 says:

“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”

That verse alone destroys the modern lie that motherhood lacks value. According to Scripture, a faithful mother deserves praise, gratitude, and honor from her family.

Reformed theologian John Calvin taught that honoring parents is ultimately connected to honoring God Himself. Calvin wrote that earthly authority structures reflect divine order. To dishonor faithful parents is to rebel against the structure God established for human flourishing.

Likewise, Matthew Henry emphasized that the mother’s role is not inferior to the father’s role but equally worthy of respect because both parents are instruments God uses in raising children. Throughout church history, Protestant theologians repeatedly defended the dignity and necessity of motherhood.

The Bible itself is filled with examples of influential mothers.

Eunice, the mother of Timothy, discipled her son in the Scriptures from childhood. Paul praised the “sincere faith” that lived first in Timothy’s grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice before taking root in Timothy himself (2 Timothy 1:5).

Then there is Hannah, whose desperate prayers for a son led to the birth of Samuel. Her devotion and surrender to God demonstrate the spiritual power of motherhood rooted in faithfulness.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is another example of humble obedience to God’s calling. Though modern evangelicalism rightly avoids unbiblical exaltation of Mary, Scripture nevertheless presents her as a faithful servant willing to submit to God’s will despite fear, scandal, and suffering.

Even Jesus Himself honored His mother. While hanging on the cross in agony, Christ ensured Mary would be cared for by entrusting her to the Apostle John (John 19:26-27). In His suffering, Jesus still fulfilled the command to honor His mother.

That matters.

Our culture increasingly promotes self-centered individualism instead of sacrificial family life. Social media trends often glorify rebellion against parents, contempt toward family structure, and hostility toward biblical gender roles. Yet many Christians on X and Instagram this year have pushed back strongly against that trend, emphasizing that motherhood is not weakness but kingdom work.

One viral Christian social media post recently declared:

“The hand that rocks the cradle still shapes the nation.”

Another popular Mother’s Day post stated:

“A godly mother is one of God’s greatest gifts to a family.”

Those statements resonate because they reflect biblical truth.

The collapse of strong families is directly tied to the rejection of biblical values. When motherhood is dishonored, children suffer. Families weaken. Society declines.

Scripture repeatedly connects the health of civilization to the strength of the home. Titus 2 instructs older women to teach younger women wisdom, purity, self-control, and faithfulness within family life. Far from degrading women, Christianity gives profound dignity to women by recognizing their eternal impact on generations.

This does not mean every woman must marry or have children. Scripture honors single women who faithfully serve Christ. Nor does honoring mothers mean pretending motherhood is easy. Many mothers carry crushing emotional, spiritual, and physical burdens with little recognition.

That is why Christians should actively encourage mothers rather than take them for granted.

Pastor John MacArthur has often emphasized that mothers serve as primary disciplers in the earliest stages of a child’s life. The influence of a godly mother can shape eternity itself. Charles Spurgeon similarly praised faithful mothers, famously saying:

“Never could it be possible for any man to estimate what he owes to a godly mother.”

That statement rings true across generations.

Many believers today can trace their faith back to praying mothers and grandmothers who faithfully taught Scripture, modeled repentance, and held families together through hardship.

Motherhood is not merely biological. Biblically, it is deeply spiritual.

Christian mothers reflect attributes of God Himself through compassion, nurture, patience, instruction, and sacrificial love. Isaiah 66:13 says:

“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.”

God even uses the imagery of motherhood to illustrate His own care for His people.

At the same time, Christians should remember Mother’s Day can also bring pain. Some women grieve infertility. Others mourn children who have died or wandered from the faith. Some carry wounds from abusive or absent mothers. Churches should approach the topic with compassion while still boldly affirming the biblical importance of motherhood.

Honoring mothers should never be confined to one Sunday in May. Scripture calls believers to continual respect, gratitude, care, and love toward faithful mothers.

A culture that mocks motherhood is ultimately mocking God’s created order.

But a society that honors godly mothers preserves wisdom, strengthens families, protects children, and glorifies the Lord.

The biblical message is clear: faithful mothers are not invisible in the eyes of God. They are worthy of honor.
