Heroic Camp Leader Saved Dozens

Richard “Dick” Eastland, esteemed director and co-owner of Camp Mystic, is being celebrated as a righteous hero after sacrificing his life to protect the young girls under his care during the catastrophic floods that struck Central Texas on July 4–7, 2025.

As torrents from the Guadalupe River surged through the camp grounds, Eastland reportedly rushed into the chaos to guide campers to safety, an act that ultimately cost him his life

Camp Mystic, nestled on 725 acres near Hunt, Texas, has been a hallmark of Christian mentorship since its founding in 1926 by University of Texas coach E. J. Stewart.

Over the decades, the Eastland family, led by Dick and his wife Tweety since 1974, has carried forth its mission of shaping character and faith in young girls.

The camp has hosted girls aged eight to seventeen, offering spiritual formation through Bible study, prayer, and worship alongside outdoor activities.

It was during the pre-dawn hours of July 4 that torrential rainfall caused a flash flood emergency. Over 5 to 10 inches of rain fell within hours, and in less than an hour, the Guadalupe River surged between 26 and 29 feet.

The river’s sudden rise caught officials and families off guard. Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly noted that “no one knew this kind of flood was coming”.

When flooding hit, more than 750 girls were sleeping in two sites at Camp Mystic. Despite the speed of the deluge, Eastland is reported to have courageously moved from cabin to cabin, ensuring that campers evacuated to higher ground. His grandson George Eastland shared on social media that Dick “died trying to save the girls that he so loved and cared for,” demonstrating the profound paternal devotion he maintained.

Colleagues and campers remembered Eastland as a father-figure and spiritual guide. Former camper Page Sumner wrote that his “last act of kindness and sacrifice was working to save the lives of campers”.

Representative August Pfluger, R‑Texas, praised his four decades of ministry as a builder of women of character, especially noting his dedication to developing strong Christian values: “He and his wife Tweety poured his life into loving and developing girls and women of character”.

Tragically, 27 campers and counselors died at Camp Mystic; numerous others remain missing, with figures fluctuating daily. As of July 7, more than 104 lives have been claimed across Central Texas as a result of the storms, with over 41 still unaccounted for.

Of these, at least 10 girls and a counselor from the camp were missing, per the most recent updates.

Governor Greg Abbott declared a statewide day of prayer on July 6, urging Texans to unite in their faith during this period of grief. He called on families and communities to turn to God for comfort and strength, emphasizing the spiritual dimension of such national trials . His call resonated with many conservatives who see divine providence and prayer as vital during times of disaster.

The broader context of the tragedy underlines serious concerns regarding emergency preparedness. Despite flash flood warnings issued by the National Weather Service, telecommunication disruptions and the rapid pace of flooding hindered evacuations.

Local officials, including Judge Kelly, cited cost concerns for not implementing flood sirens or more robust warning systems.

Meanwhile, acts of mercy and courage emerged across the region. Coast Guard swimmer Scott Ruskan was lauded for rescuing 165 people, and volunteers worked tirelessly, including from the Salvation Army and local churches.

These responses reflect the strength of community and Christian service in crisis.

The loss of Dick Eastland reverberates through the conservative Christian community nationwide. Many view his final deed not only as heroism but also as the ultimate testament to his lifelong devotion to Christ-like love and stewardship. His legacy is being framed as that of a true shepherd who gave everything for his flock.

In the wake of tragedy, the focus now turns toward recovery, prayer, and support. Families impacted by the floods are leaning on churches and faith-based organizations for counseling and relief. Conservative leaders are calling for stronger flood warning systems and more practical investments in community safety, guided by prudent stewardship principles.

The story of Dick Eastland’s sacrifice will undoubtedly serve as a powerful example of Christian leadership for generations. In times when courage and conviction are tested, his willingness to lay down his life for young campers shines as a guiding light in a troubled time.

This event underscores the enduring value of conservative Christian values in guiding responses to national tragedies. It is through faith, self-sacrifice, and community unity that Washington, Jefferson, and modern patriots alike find our greatest strength.

The coming days will be quiet in prayer but resolute in resolve. While the physical devastation is vast, the spiritual inheritance of one man’s love and commitment remains unshaken.
